Sorry I’m not in today, I’m moving house! Some of you have now finished your BTEC work and should be congratulated on your efforts and some of you still have some things to do, which we shall tackle when I’m back on Thursday.

Today’s lesson:

You will need to produce a plan for an experiment and present it as a scientific report. We will carry out the practical next lesson and will then come back to the IT rooms to write it up.

You need to plan a piece of practical work to investigate how cooking peppers changes the amount of vitamin C they have in them.

You will need to complete a report and answer the following questions:

Title

Introduction

-          What are you investigating?

-          What do you think will happen?

Background science

-          What is vitamin C and why is it important?

-          What happens to vitamin C when it is cooked?

-          What is DC-PIP and how do you use it to test for vitamin C?

Method

-          Plan an experiment to answer the question. You will have access to beakers, Bunsens and heating apparatus, water, plenty of peppers (your vegetable), DC PIP, Pasteur pipettes, Pestles and Mortars and anything else sensible that you would like.

Ensure you have completed your article on "how to save the Earth". This must include sections on acid rain, global warming, quarrying, waste disposal/landfill and deforestation. You should look at previous posts for help and the questions to answer

Your article was about the human impact on the environment and you must now compare two of these to the "natural changes to the environment" that we looked at before - e.g. earthquakes and volcanoes.
Discuss which has the greatest impact on the environment. To help you do this you could make a table covering these points, or just write about them:

For each effect on the environment answer these questions:

• What damage has it caused to people? 
• What damage has it caused to animals and plants? 
• What are the long term effects on the land? 
• What are the long term effects on the air?

You must write about earthquakes, volcanoes and two from acid rain, global warming, quarrying, waste disposal/landfill and deforestation

Good afternoon,

I'm sorry I'm not in today, I'm on a trip with my year 11 students.

Today you need to finish off the work on conduction, convection and radiation (see previous blog post) and then you need to complete the sheets in your red book that are related on pages 82, 83, 78 and 79. If you don't have your red book then you need to ask the cover teacher if you can go and copy someone else's.
